Rafting, an activity accessible to everyone
Rafting is much more than just a boat trip down white water. It's a complete adventure that combines action, nature, and camaraderie. Contrary to popular belief, rafting is not reserved for athletes or experienced adventurers. It's an activity perfectly suited for beginners, and the Nive at Bidarray is one of the best places in France to get started.
At Ur Bizia, we welcome hundreds of people each year who have never rafted before. Our experience and team of qualified professionals ensure a safe, fun, and memorable experience.
Difficulty levels on the Nive
The Nive offers several sections suited to different skill levels. For beginners, Class II to III rapids are ideal. These rapids provide enough adrenaline for a first experience without being too intimidating.
The section between Bidarray and Cambo-les-Bains is particularly popular with beginners. Lasting about 2 hours, it allows natural progression with calm moments to admire the Basque landscape and more dynamic sections to test your newly acquired skills.
What's the minimum age for rafting?
Children from 6-7 years old can participate in adapted rafting sessions, while adults of all ages are welcome. There's no upper age limit, and we've welcomed participants over 80 who loved the experience.
What matters isn't age or physical strength, but rather your willingness to be carried away by the adventure. The Nive at Bidarray is progressive enough for everyone to find their personal challenge.
What to bring for your first descent?
You need to bring almost nothing! Ur Bizia provides all necessary equipment: the life jacket (an essential safety element), the paddle, and all protective equipment. We simply recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting wet and closed-toe shoes with good grip.
In winter, consider a neoprene or thermal suit. In summer, a simple swim shorts or swimsuit is sufficient. Sunglasses with a retention strap are practical for protecting your eyes from splash and sun.
Safety first
At Ur Bizia, safety is our absolute priority. All our guides are certified and regularly trained in rescue procedures. Before departure, a complete briefing explains the basics: how to sit properly, how to paddle in rhythm with the group, and most importantly how to stay safe.
The life jacket is not optional but mandatory. The Nive rapids, while magnificent, require constant vigilance and good mental preparation.
Why Bidarray is ideal for beginners
Bidarray is located at the heart of the Basque Country, a region rich in history and culture. The Nive at this location offers a perfect combination: enough rapids to be exciting, but not too difficult for novices. The lush landscape of the Basque mountains creates a spectacular backdrop for your first experience.
Furthermore, Bidarray is easily accessible from major regional cities (Bayonne, Biarritz, San Sebastián) and has all necessary services for a comfortable stay: restaurants, accommodations, and varied tourist attractions.
Mental preparation
Rafting requires some mental preparation. You must accept getting wet, facing your fears, and trusting yourself. Many participants discover unexpected capabilities once on the water. It's also an excellent way to build trust within a group or family.
At Ur Bizia, our team ensures you feel comfortable from the start. We begin slowly, explain each step, and gradually increase the pace.
Your turn!
Beginner rafting isn't an impossible mountain to climb. It's an accessible, safe, and extraordinarily fun adventure. Whether you come alone, with family, or with friends, the Nive at Bidarray awaits you. Contact Ur Bizia today to book your first rafting descent in the Basque Country!
